We’ve inaugurated our brand-new Southern Regional Office, ‘the Digital House,’ in Karachi’s Sky Tower, Clifton. Embodying the Jazz identity, this state-of-the-art office boasts an innovative design with spaces geared towards providing a healthier workplace.
We partnered up with Omnicomm, a global telemetry and fleet management solutions provider, to introduce ‘Jazz Biz Fuelmatic,’ an Internet of Things (IoT) based fuel management solution allowing businesses to minimize their environmental impact by achieving energy efficiency. Jazz Business will provide this integrated solution to manage the fuel consumption of diesel generator set (genset), as well as to monitor various fuel storage units. The system connects to the Genset to monitor almost any parameter with data from fuel-level sensors and transmits this data in real-time to a cloud-based online, self-service platform. This initiative adds to Jazz Business’ vision to revolutionize Pakistan’s enterprise landscape through the adoption of IoT and the digitalization of work processes.
A presentation aimed at officers under training from the Federal Investigation Agency’s Cybercrime Wing was given by Jazz’s CEO, Aamir Ibrahim, at the National Police Academy. The session highlighted initiatives taken by Jazz to support increased security throughout the mobile ecosystem.
Pakistan’s number one 4G operator and the largest internet and broadband service provider, Jazz remained focused on expanding its digital services with 4G capacity expansion and network roll out. In the second quarter of 2020, Jazz’s overall subscriber base grew by 5.6% year-over-year (YoY) reaching 62.8 million, 4G customer base grew by 71.5% reaching 19.1 million whereas the overall data users grew by 11.1% YoY reaching 41 million. Jazz continued network investment, with 4G base stations increasing by 17% YoY to over 10,000; 4G subscriber penetration reached 30%, alongside data usage increase of 97.9% YoY reaching 3.6 GB per user. Jazz’s self-care app, Jazz World, has crossed 6 million monthly active users, a YoY increase of 305%, making it the largest telco app in Pakistan. Jazz TV and content services (Bajao & Deikho) are also seeing encouraging momentum.
We’ve successfully deployed the country’s first 400G technology on our fiber-optic network, increasing our data capacity to be able to deliver high speeds equivalent to over 180,000 HD video streams at the same time or more than 70,000 songs downloaded in a single second! The 400G technology significantly increases the network’s data to provide more data through existing fiber networks, carrying capacity, and can deliver up to 400 billion bits of information per second. Our 400G network is currently carrying live customer traffic across the Lahore metro region.
As employees return to offices, Jazz HSE has installed an Automatic Air Sanitizer and a Disinfection unit in DHQ-3. Jazz is the first company to install such equipment in Pakistan and remain committed to using advanced technology to improve SOPs to deal with the current situation while mitigating employee anxiety and stress. HSE is also experimenting with antiviral sheets on work stations, which use nanotechnology to eradicate viruses and other harmful pathogens upon contact instantly.

On 27th July, we held the Investor Roundtable 2.0; a consultative session through NIC. Participants included important stakeholders such as local and international angel investors, VC Fund representatives, SBP, SECP, and Govt officials, founders, and influencers. The idea was to discuss the challenges faced by the ecosystem and the needed interventions from the private and public sectors. The output will be a white paper that will be drafted with everyone and shared with the stakeholders and regulators.

Under this partnership, DigiSkills.pk freelancers can transfer money from their Payoneer accounts into their JazzCash Mobile Account in real-time and at the best exchange rates. Following the announcement of the Warid merger in 2017, the technology team identified two phases for the network consolidation. In the first phase, the Radio Access and Data Core Networks were consolidated under the DSEURR project. In this second and final phase, the two voice core networks have now been consolidated to become the country’s biggest voice core network, serving 62 Million Jazz families! This project has not only significantly reduced the Jazz Core-locations footprint but has also created an organizational strategy towards the virtualization of the network. Catering to the needs of Muslims during the holy month of Ramzan, Jazz World integrated a dedicated Islam feature in the app to enable users to keep track of their prayers and worship. Offering a wider array of options within the same app, the feature gives existing and new users access to a multitude of information including the timings for Sehri and Iftaari, timings for the five daily prayers, and the ability to read and share Quranic verses amongst other things. Following the success of the Ramzan feature with over 100,000 users benefitting from it every day, Jazz World now has a permanent Islam section for Muslims to keep track of their prayers and worship throughout the year.

The Universal Service Fund (USF) has awarded a contract worth PKR 92 Million to Jazz to provide high-speed broadband in Kurram Lot (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa). The Federal Secretary for IT, Shoaib Ahmad Siddiqui inaugurated the Next Generation Broadband for the Sustainable Development project in Kurram (Tehsils of FR Kurram, Lower Kurram and Upper Kurram) at a ceremony held at Ministry of IT & Telecom on Monday. The contract was signed by USF CEO Haaris Mahmood Chaudhry and Jazz’s Chief Corporate & Regulatory Affairs Officer Syed Fakhar Ahmed.
JazzCash, has successfully launched a Digital Merchant Onboarding portal – the first of its kind in the industry. This solution allows business owners to swiftly and seamlessly register their business accounts online via the JazzCash website and start receiving digital payments through QR codes. Customers can make payments by scanning the QR code via the JazzCash app or USSD. JazzCash is the first player in Pakistan to offer this service while complying with the State Bank of Pakistan’s regulations on digital merchant onboarding. Kudos JazzCash team!
Pakistan’s leading digital company Jazz has contributed PKR 50 million to the Prime Minister's COVID-19 Pandemic Relief Fund, in line with its commitment to support the government in the fight against COVID-19. In a meeting that took place between Prime Minister Imran Khan and Jazz CEO, Aamir Ibrahim, support for those in need during these trying times was reiterated. The cheque was presented to the Government specifically for health relief and food rations.
Jazz’s relief team reached Quetta, Baluchistan, with food supplies for the destitute as per its partnership with the Edhi Foundation. Under the presence of the Deputy Speaker National Assembly, Qasim Khan Suri, the food rations, which can last an average family for four weeks, were distributed amongst 3000 individuals. Qasim Khan Suri commended Jazz’s continuous support for families and individuals impacted by the lockdown and called on other organizations to follow suit and concentrate relief efforts in Baluchistan.
As the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) spreads across Pakistan, the health system is increasingly under pressure. One of the biggest issues being faced is the limited availability of free of cost testing for the destitute population. Realizing this as an urgent need, Jazz has donated PKR 8 million to Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre (SKMCH&RC), which shall fund 1000 COVID-19 tests. SKMCH&RC is a site designated for COVID-19 testing and has so far conducted over 500 free of cost tests on those who fulfilled the initial testing criteria.
As the lockdown continues and the new realities of working from home sets in, the mental health wellness of many has seen a stark decline. In an effort to help those struggling, Jazz Business partnered up with the Ministers Delivery Unit (MDU), Punjab Health Department and Mind Organization, a non-profit mental health care provider, to launch a COVID-19 Mental Wellbeing helpline titled “Zehni Sehat Helpline’. Those suffering from mental health issues during the ongoing countrywide lockdown can dial 0304-1110116 (Monday to Saturday 9AM-5PM), and talk to qualified psychiatrists and mental health specialists to receive support and advice. While we Flex, we’ve launched the “Jazz Fit Goes Digital” campaign, focusing on our proposition #JazzCares. Keeping in mind the physical and mental well-being of our people, we have introduced online fitness sessions and counselor services. The counselor services are available through one-on-one sessions which allow people to talk about stress and seek advice for their concerns. Especially through these uncertain times, our counseling services are available through a dedicated helpline and email to schedule one-on-one sessions on Blue Jeans. This online program has been met with overwhelmingly positive response, as over 30 individual sessions per week are taking place since the breakout of the pandemic. The online fitness classes have begun from the start of April and have received a great response from the employees. More than 150 people connect daily via Workplace by Facebook to join the class at 6pm every day.
As the COVID-19 cases started to roll in and the government decided to initiate a lockdown, the Corporate Affairs (CA) team known for firefighting, immediately started its stakeholder management. The CA team’s foremost task was to get telecom services declared as essential services. With over 400 engagements at the policy level nationwide, the team successfully got an exemption for telecom services. Since the lockdown, the team has managed to support business in ensuring franchise operations, movements of technical teams, protecting data and has actively participated in distribution of relief packages.

Jazz was the first telco to pledge over a billion PKR geared towards COVID-19 relief. The support includes short to mid-term initiatives tailored primarily for the most vulnerable communities. With Inter Bank Funds Transfer (IBFT), Jazz Business customers can now pay their Jazz Business Account bills by transferring the accumulated amount to PMCL’s bank account, from the comfort of their homes. We’ve already managed to receive PKR 60 Million of the bill payments against 450 transactions. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) recently released the results of its quarterly Quality of Service (QoS) survey for the 3rd quarter of 2019. This survey was conducted jointly with Cellular Mobile Operators (CMOs) in four cities of Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan – between July 2019 and September 2019. The services were tested using NEMO automated QoS tool. As per the results of this survey, Jazz maintained its position as Pakistan’s fastest 4G network. This was distinguished through the performance of data services by measuring User Data Throughput and Signal Strength as Key Performance Indicators.

To celebrate this success, a ceremony was held, where Shafqat Mahmood, Federal Minister for Education, Ursula Burns, VEON’s CEO and Chairman and Saif Chi, Huawei’s CEO graced the occasion to commend the team behind the programme and encourage its adoption in all middle schools of Islamabad.
